For someone interested in becoming a welder, there are many great training programs offered in vocational schools and community colleges all over the U.S. If you live in the state of New Jersey, there are numerous options to choose from. Most programs will teach you the basics of safe and efficient welding, the different types of welding methods that you will likely use and, prepare you to take the required certification exams.
In New Jersey, the annual pay scale ranges from $13.86 per hour or $28,840 per year for a welder with little experience to $25.98 per hour or $54,030 per year for a senior welder. The average is $21.05 per hour or $43,790 per year.
Historically, over the past 5 years, the average salary for an experienced welder has risen from $34,800 to $43,790 per year or a 5-year increase of 21%. Welders earn less than 70% of all careers in New Jersey. When compared to the rest of the United States, New Jersey ranks number 8 in terms of average median salary paid.
Welders who keep up to date on the latest technology are in high demand with employers. Additionally, welding skills are very transferrable among employers and states. Nationwide most employers are in the construction and manufacturing sectors; however another large employer of welders is electric and gas utilities.
Currently in New Jersey, there are 3,870 jobs available for welders. By 2017, the projected number of jobs that will be available is expected to be 3,890, or a change of 0.3% from 2015. The average annual number of job openings is projected at 110.
Despite slow employment growth and low concentrations of employment opportunities in New Jersey for welders, skilled welders with up-to-date training should have good job opportunities and wages that are significantly higher than the national average.
